Effusion Cells for Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Effusion cells (or "Knudsen-cells" or "k-cells") are used to generate molecular and atomic beams from a large variety of elements and compounds while allowing for tight temperature control. While in principle the design of an effusion cell is fairly simple, it's sophistication lies in the detail, and the tailoring of the effusion cell design to the specific application.

Depending on the material to be evaporated and environmental conditions design choices that have to be made range from heating filament design, material, positioning and control, crucible material, shape, aperture, size, and a number of many other factors that decide the performance and lifetime of the cell. We offer effusion cells that operate in temperature ranges of as low as -50 °C up to beyond 2000 °C.

With our partner CreaTec we are very pleased to be able to offer decades of experience and hundreds of effusion cells placed world-wide in research and industry. All effusion cells are manufactured under clean room conditions (class 10 -100). Selected materials are used for the effusion cells ensuring high reliability for a long term operation.

Effusion Cells made from Molybdenum

For special applications where tantalum as a body material is not feasible we offer effusion cells completely made from molybdenum. Such effusion cells are mainly used in processes where corrosive species are involved.

Electron Beam Evaporators

The e-beam evaporation sources of our partner, CreaTec GmbH, Germany, are designed for the evaporation of low vapour pressure materials either from wire, rod or crucible under true UHV conditions. These evaporation instruments are suitable for metals like iron, cobalt, nickel, silver, copper, gold, palladium, platinum etc. and insulators like magnesium oxide, magnesium fluoride, calcium fluoride etc. and semiconductors in particular silicon from rod.
